Count Down to Mars Landing - Lockheed Martin Delivers InSight

Written by Casey Coyne | Nov 26, 2018 7:56:24 PM

Milky Way Galaxy - Today, there will be another "giant step for mankind" on our ruddy, rocky sibling planet - Mars. Today, Lockheed Martin's and NASA's InSight probe makes its scheduled landing to begin its two-year long exploration.

Since inception in 2010, Lockheed Martin has been the prime contractor for the InSight probe (Interior Explorations using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport). They designed, built, and tested the spacecraft. They saw it off on its maiden voyage on May 5th. And, they are ready to see it throughout its exploration.

But not only did they oversee its creation, they added to its strength. Lockheed Martin designed and implemented the EDL process - the cruise stage after launch all the way to Entry, Descent, and Landing on Mars and during the surface operations. Once on Mars, MSA (Mission Support Area) in Denver will continue to support the probe's overall health and the collection of scientific data.

The goal? Unlock the 4-billion-year-old code of how terrestrial planets - including Earth - form as well as measure the planet's "vital signs" such as:

  • "Pulse" - Seismic activity and meteor impacts
  • "Temperature" - Geothermal heat flux
  • "Reflexes" - Precision tracking of rotational variations

Let's see what else Mars - and our Lockheed Martians - can teach us about our galaxy!
