"Listen, Learn, Then Lead" - TEVET Takes Time to Focus on Culture Growth

Greeneville, TN - At TEVET, we foster continual growth for our employees. We believe that you only grow through continued education, training, and moments of reflection. To facilitate this growth, TEVET has started a "Third Thursday" tradition.

This month, we focused on learning and leadership. We turned toward a popular TED Talk - "Listen, Learn, Then Lead" by General Stanley McChrystal. In that he spoke of his time in the military and how variables such as communication and the type of people serving have changed during his decades of command. The original military stereotypes - scruffy and tough men, education and leadership from top-down, and communication to only the men near your command - have been shattered by the reality of today's military - men and women from all different walks of life at all different ages, education being shared from bottom-up as well as top-down, and communication rapidly evolving with the digital age and different platforms. General McChrystal witnessed all of these changes firsthand.

The TED Talk was empowering and inspirational. But the TEVET team walked away with something more actionable - leadership and education can come from anywhere and anybody. We refreshed our approach to problem solving, communication, and growth. Solutions don't always come from the top or even within our own departments. Sometimes, the best solutions come from an outside observer (a different unit for General McChrystal or a different department for TEVET). And new approaches are not dangerous, sometimes they are the most effective (new communication apps to reach distant soldiers for General McChrystal or a new employee asking "why" for TEVET).

Positive growth for individuals turns into a positive culture for the company and growth for the entirety. By witnessing our growth and change, we encourage other companies to dedicate a specific amount of time toward culture building. Take the time, take the leap, and see the positive effects your faith and efforts will have on your overall company culture. We have and continue to do so.
